It’s here! The original sound of the first Flying Colors album, before it was mastered in the loudness wars of contemporary commercial releases.

True Colors is the raw master created by legendary mix engineer and possible Faustian bargain-maker Michael Brauer. It’s what the band heard in the studio. How close is to the commercial master? It’s close, but noticeable. You can hear Kayla in the Trailer, minus the bridge (unless you wanted a five-minute trailer). It’s only YouTube-quality audio, but gives you an idea what to expect.

You probably already bought the commercial release, so True Colors is an $8 digital download, and there’s no CD version (although you can burn one from the WAV files). The download is 1GB, and includes:

  • The original, raw 16-bit WAV files.
  • Uncompressed FLAC.
  • 320 Kbps MP3 files.
  • 256 Kbps iTunes/AAC files.
  • A 102 page (51 spreads) digital booklet in Ultra HD. It’s packed with all-new artwork, an award-awaiting new cover by Bill, and 50 unreleased photos from the making of the album.

True Colors is a great new addition to any Flying Colors fan’s collection. The new photo book alone is worth the price. Just downloaded the music files and began listening. Love the quality of the WAV and MP3 files. Have not yet finished listening to all versions of all songs. But we, as Flying Color fans, know the talent within and behind this band. So we know we’ll be pleased.

True Colors offers us all something refreshing and new to hold us over until the third album comes out. Can’t wait!

This was like hearing This record, already one of my all time favorites, for the first time again. Casey’s angelic vocals sound as crisp as ever and it is great to hear the new mix on Kayla. Great job guys, can’t wait for FC III. This year???

Any music of Flying Colors is worth getting, but this one shines among them all.

I didn’t know what to expect when I started listening to the original sound of the first Flying Colors album. I mean, I’ve lived with the songs that make up that record for the past five years and I know them inside out. I have all the little nuances and subtleties of those songs imprinted in my head and I can probably mentally play all of them from start to finish at the drop of a hat. Could this new release surprise me in some way? I didn’t really now. Well, the answer is clearly affirmative. This anti-loudness version of the songs does give them a different (I’d say new—because it’s new to me– but they existed in this form before they were mastered) life and breath. You’ll immediately realize upon listening to “True Colors” that some parts of the songs pop out in ways they do not in the previously released version (sometimes catching you by surprise). In a way, I kind of felt like I was listening the songs for the first time so that was pretty cool!

Pulled down from the metaphorical shelf, polished and buffed until it glistens, yes this is Flying Colors, but it’s fresher, crisper, clearer and fuller than it was. What this version does is present the songs at their very best – I’ve heard this music many many times before but compesssion means that elements got lost in the big sound – those are the things that stand out- backing vocals, little guitar or keyboard colourings , all supported by MP and Dave LaRue coming through packing the punch of one of rock’s finest rhythm sections. It’s not a case of “Ive already got that” but rather “Hear it again for the first time”

This sounds great. It’s really nice to see artists becoming aware that compression negates the sonic richness of their voices and instruments. Their audience doesn’t want it.
